If this requires server login/authentication, doesn't that place it firmly in the realm of a Client/Server application as opposed to a P2P system? For a true P2P system it would require distributed authentication (likely using PGP or some such), would it not?

I agree. However the main focus on the P2P SocNet is its ability to control who you connect to. The ability for what you can share or not. Any server will only act as a 'cache'. To sweeten it, you can use an asymmetrical encryption to establish the peer connectivity.
